Topic : The Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue; past, present and future
Presented by: Hugh Jefferies (MBE)

Time: 14.00 (London)
Overview:

Hugh Jefferies (MBE) has been a collector for nearly 65 years and the editor of the Stanley Gibbons Catalogue since 2003. In this talk he traces the development of the catalogue since its first edition in 1865 and explains how it has adapted to meet the changing needs of collectors and the challenges of new technology and the issuing policies of the world's postal administrations. He discusses the work which goes into each new volume and invites everyone to contribute to future editions to ensure that it remains the best guide to our hobby available.

Topic : The Story of the Maltese Cross
Presented by: Howard Hughes for RPSL
Time: 20.00 (London)
Overview:

The Maltese Cross was the first handstamp designed to cancel postage stamps and postal stationery. As such, the lessons learnt from its introduction and use affected not only the development of later obliterators in Great Britain and Ireland but also of those throughout the World. This display illustrates the life of the Maltese Cross from before its introduction through to its lingering demise and includes examples of unusual coloured or distinctive Crosses alongside normal usages and some rather quirky usages. The talk has been specially prepared for this event and is not a repeat of the version on the GBPS YouTube channel.

Topic :  Introduction to Japanese Philately and Activity of Japan Philatelic Society Foundation (JPS)
Presented by: Renichi Yamada

Overview:
The first postage stamps in Japan were issued in 1871, which was 31 years later than UK. Japanese stamps in early period have very interesting features for philatelists. For example, the first series were directly engraved by hand. This means all printing plates were hand-made. After explaining such interesting points of early Japanese stamps, we introduce an activity of the largest philatelic society in Japan, Japan Philatelic Society Foundation, JPS. JPS has many activities such as philatelic exhibitions, philatelic study circles, publications and so on. Finally we introduce our bilingual (Japanese and English) catalogues which can be good navigation to Japanese Philately.

Topic : The “Wilding Castles” 1955- 1970
Presented by: Mike Roberts for RPSL
Time: 17.00 (London)
Overview:

This famous set of high value stamps was finally released by the Post Office in September 1955 after years of discussion, two design competitions and many committee sessions.
The approved designs were from a concept by Lynton Lamb and included images of four castles, Carrickfergus Castle [representing Northern Ireland], Caernarfon Castle [Wales], Edinburgh Castle [Scotland] and Windsor Castle [England]. The Queen’s Portrait was by Dorothy Wilding.
The intaglio printing process was used, the first printer being Waterlow & Sons Ltd. [1955 - 1957], De La Rue & Co Ltd followed [1957 - 1962] and finally Bradbury Wilkinson [1963 - 1968].
Watermarks were changed twice but not at the same time as the printing contracts.
